10 Benefits of Installing a Small Duct, High Velocity System

#1. The entire system is engineered

High Velocity AC, through our design process, provides an exact material list that is needed for each home.  The end user is guaranteed the capacity and comfort outcome as stipulated in our design specifications. This also protects the warranties that we will provide for all dwellings.

#2. Duct leakage of less than 1%

Measured in a blower door test, a SDHV duct system leaks less than 1% of the total designed CFM produced by the blower.  As the building envelope gets tighter, accurate capacity design along with a leak free duct system become more and more critical.

#3. SDHV blower technology

Our SDHV manufacturers offer a true variable speed motor that ramps up and down according to capacity, ventilation and humidity control needs.  This means that we are optimizing the energy used to cool and or heat the dwelling. The motor is programmable so that designed CFM of air is exactly produced by the motor - no more, no less.

#4. SDHV cooling and heating coil technology

SDHV systems produce half the volume of air of a traditional HVAC system.  This is a key factor of an air tight dwelling. A three ton SDHV system produces 675 CFM of air.  A traditional three ton system produces 1200 CFM of air – nearly two times that of a SDHV system. A traditional coil is three copper rows thick.  A SDHV coil is six copper rows thick. The lower volume of air matched with the thicker coil results in 30% greater humidity removal because of a larger temperature drop across the coil (24 to 26 degrees versus 15 to 16 degrees for a traditional).

On the heating side, a SDHV system matched to ANY air-to-air heat pump, will deliver significantly warmer air than a traditional system. At 30 degrees outside temperature, the air temperature delivered at the SDHV outlet is 116 degrees while the air temperature at a traditional register is 92 degrees.  We eliminate the problem of “cold blow” using an add-on heat pump. This results in lower energy bills for the dwelling with an SDHV system as the electric heat back up rarely (if ever) is needed.

#5. Eliminate the need for an ERV / HRV ( Energy Recovery Ventilator )

A small duct, high velocity system employs a motor which has the ability to filter the whole building's air to hospital grade levels with an imperceptible reduction in efficiency.  Because of this efficient design, we can also filter the fresh air brought into the home before it ducts into the return side of the system.

The software driven motor has the ability to bring in EXACTLY the right amount of fresh air needed for the dwelling over a 24 hour period.  This is an important benefit to factor. No excess of fresh air is brought in because any additional load on the coil causes an increase in energy use. Not bringing in enough fresh air as needed could cause a health concern for occupants. Being energy efficient and eliminating another piece of equipment that uses energy saves costs for the end user.

#6. Perfect distribution of both conditioned air and fresh air

The technology of our blower allows it to quietly and gently inject the air into the conditioned space creating a venturi effect around the air stream. This venturi effect mixes the air in the room, evenly distributing comfort and fresh air within the space.  Because the system is custom designed for the end users’ environment, the exact CFM of both heated or cooled air and CFM of fresh air is provided automatically and uniformly.

#7. COMPLETLEY HANDLE season moisture concerns

Where tight thermal construction methods are used in order to get a LEED rating or a better HERS score, a buildup of moisture inside the tight structure can occur with no way to mitigate this potentially damaging situation.  For example, an end-user opens the windows for a day or two in spring/fall to take advantage of the cool, fresh air. With the windows open both fresh air and humidity come into the home. Then the temperature rises again, the windows are closed and the AC system is turned on.  A traditional AC system will dump a large volume of air into the home (see #4 above), satisfy the thermostat quickly and then shut off, not dehumidifying the space.

The small duct, high velocity system handles moisture management like no other AC system can. The capability of our systems to use variable speed motors, utilize software technology to set indoor relative humidity perfectly, and programming the heat pump/condenser to a lower capacity means the space will ALWAYS dehumidify a space effectively and efficiently. Every stakeholder in the building process is interested in eliminating insurance or warranty claims related to moisture management.

#8.The duct is smaller and can be integrated into construction and the build space

By working together with you, High Velocity AC can bring UNICO or High Velocity AC ducting into the build space and integrate it into the construction. These two actions produce greater architectural latitude and save the end-user money on attic insulation because there’s no need to “bury the ductwork” to achieve a higher HERS or LEED rating.  In cases where our ducting is present in the attic, it’s buried in the normal course of installing attic installation.

#9. ISO9001/2008

Because our vendors’ entire manufacturing process is ISO certified, we have the ability to order and purchase the exact parts needed for each installation and deliver these to you in “kits.”

#10. Education of your key internal and external stakeholders

High Velocity AC, can provide education on the optimal design, installation and application of our small duct, high velocity product lines for your application.

Yes! But we've got you covered! High Velocity AC offers certification classes that count toward your ongoing continuing education courses. Fill out our form at right if you are interested in our continuing course schedule.

Additionally, we offer on-the-job training. If you hire us to install the Unico System, we will certify you on the job as we install.
